This year, the VI Transborder Forum of the Southwest Iberian Hall took place, an event that brought together over 400 participants, including entrepreneurs and politicians from Portugal and Spain. The central objective was to strengthen infrastructure in the region, removing barriers and creating interconnected networks.
The organization was led by the coordinator of the Southwest Iberian Network platform, Mr. António Garcia Salas, and his work was widely recognized. During the event, Mr. Rui Nabeiro was honored, highlighting his legacy in overcoming challenges and seeking opportunities.
Participants expressed their commitment to drive the project, which aims to develop a network of major routes to improve mobility and accessibility throughout the region. This plan includes the creation of railway, road, air, energy, water, digital, environmental, and knowledge networks.
This effort aims to transform the region between Lisbon and Madrid into a polycentric space, connected by an urban network serving over 20 million inhabitants. Political authorities from Portugal and Spain were also present, demonstrating their support for the project.
Next steps include closer connections between Spain and Portugal, the development of infrastructure in the Southwest Iberian macro-region, electrification of the Lisbon-Madrid line by 2026, and the long-awaited high-speed line by 2030. Transparency and credibility in timelines and investments are also priorities.
A surprising highlight was the current situation of the Lisbon-Madrid train connection, which currently takes over 9 hours and involves three transfers. With the high-speed project underway, it is expected that this journey will be significantly reduced by 2030. Join us in this transformation and connectivity project!
